Yankees Claim 27th World Series Title
The New York Yankees claim their 27th championship beating the Phillies 4-2. Congratulations to all NY Yankees fans. We would send our congratulations to the Yankees players but when you spend $208 million this season, you are expected to win. The Yankees win their first year in the new Yankees Stadium and the difference this year could a combination of factors. Alex Rodriguez had a great post season and when you make $8 million per year more than the entire Pittsburgh Pirates team, you better produce runs. CC Sabathia pitched wonderfully and Mariano Rivera remains unhittable.
As a baseball fan, was the Yankees winning another world title good for baseball? Well for the millions of Yankees fans out there the answer would be most certainly Yes! For the millions of Phillies fans and Yankee haters, the answer would No! If the Phillies won, would winning back to back Championships be good for baseball? Well if the TV ratings for the World Series have anything to say about MLB, they were the highest rated in recent years.
Many feel the Yankees spending $420 million in the offseason signing baseball’s top 3 free agents was them buying a championship. However, the Yankees are just flexing their competitive edge and are not breaking any MLB rules. If the Yankees continue to spend money they will continue to win. When you spend $100 million more than other teams in baseball, it’s tough to respect what they have done.
I for one feel that the Phillies will be contenders for the next 5+ years. If they go out and pick up another starting pitcher in the offseason or pull another “Cliff Lee move” half way in the season, there is no reason they shouldn’t be right back in the World Series next November. We all know from watching this series that Yankees stuck with a 3 man rotation and all 3 starters would be considered aces on any pitching staff.
Unlike last year, the Phillies hitters were not clicking on all cylinders. With the exception of Chase Utley, Howard and Ibanez suddenly were unable to hit left handed pitching. Rollins and Victorino didn’t act like lead off hitters and were not able to get on base consistently. If you don’t have dominate pitching to silence the Yankees hitters you have to out slug them and Philadelphia simply didn’t do that.
While the American League can be considered the dominant league, as evident by the All Star game, the Phillies have been the class of the NL for the past two years. Although the Yankees have the highest payroll and a never ending list of superstars, it will be more difficult for them to return to the Series. The Phillies on the other hand will have to play very well all year, again, to make it back 3 straight years. With such a long, draining season in MLB you really have to have a bit of luck to keep all your players healthy and quality starting pitching and bullpen help. The Phillies have a young core group of players and will surely make moves in the offseason to help their bullpen and get at least one more quality starting pitcher.
With that being said, how good would it be for MLB to see the Yankees and Phillies back in the 2010 World Series? It could very well happen.

It was an entertaining world series to watch from a fans stand point. The 2 best teams from each league did end up in the World Series this year. You’re right that the Phillies have to be the odds on favorite to return from the NL. A couple question marks remain with the Yankees in Matsui and Pettitte but they will obviously make additions in the offseason as always.

Great series! There were a number of guys on the Yankees side that had good arguments for being named MVP as well as Utley on the Phillies side. Both teams will certainly make a run next year baring any serious injuries to key players. I’m really looking forward to seeing what the rest of the Major League teams do to counter.
