After further review…

We have seen it time and time again, an umpire that is forced to make a judgment call relating to a home run, fair or foul, above or below the yellow line? Part of the tradition of MLB is the human element involved in the game without the technological advancements we see in other professional sports. The fear of “slowing” down the game has become a distant thought compared to getting a call right which may very well determine the outcome of a game. We all know the importance of each game down the stretch and there were quite a few teams that suffered in May from incorrect calls that possibly could cost them post-season births come September.

Months ago general managers voted overwhelmingly 25-5 to use instant replay to clarify boundary calls, determining a potential home run. It appears that most umpires are in favor as well, I am sure they don’t want to be approached on the street by a crazed fan for missing an important call. Fans appear to be in favor and from people I have talked to we all agree that instant reply could actually speed up the game as opposed to slowing down the game. It is almost a given that a manager will come out to argue a close home run call that could last for many minutes disputing the call. Within this time frame it is almost certain that instant reply would determine the correct call and avoid any manager/umpire confrontations. Why can’t Bud Selig and MLB see what all of the fans see? Baseball needs replay instantly!

Unfortunately for Carlos Delgado, Geovanny Soto, Alex Rodriguez and Ben Francisco, all of whom were robbed of home runs, they learned painfully that MLB and Bud Selig are too stubborn to use instant reply to undo blown calls. We are speaking to you Commissioner Bud Selig, as loyal fans of the game; your time to act is now!

Instant replay is very important in helping re-establish the integrity of the game. We have to get off the notion of “tradition”. The tradition of MLB is not going anywhere and it will always be America’s pastime, however, we are seeing how teams can be affected by missed calls. I say if the technology is available we must take advantage of it.

I agree, I am sick of the time wasted grouping the umpires to determine a call.
