Red River Rundown
Monday, October 6th, 2008One of the greatest rivalry games in American sports is set to kick off this Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Since 1900, the two Big 12 rivals Oklahoma and Texas have played this game. Texas has intrastate rival Texas A&M and Oklahoma has intrastate rival Oklahoma State. But to Texas fans, their only true rivals are the Oklahoma Sooners. And for Sooners fans, the game that matters most is their annual tussle with the hated Longhorns. The showdown between the Longhorns and Sooners—known far and wide as the Red River Rivalry, has become one of college football’s best and most bitter rivalries.
This kind of history is what makes this Saturday’s game so special. It’s the first time in 17 years that both teams are unbeaten and for the first time since 2004 both are in the top five. The No. 1 Sooners (5-0, 1-0 Big 12) are led by sophomore QB Sam Bradford, while the fifth-ranked Longhorns (5-0, 1-0 Big 12) are guided by junior QB Colt McCoy. Both quarterbacks are Heisman Trophy candidates and the winner will probably have an even stronger candidacy. With personal aspirations aside, the winner of this game will determine the early favorite in the stacked Big 12 South Division, which also features No. 7 Texas Tech and No. 17 Oklahoma State. Needless to say, the winner of the 2008 Red River Rivalry will also help one team pursue a national championship.
Texas leads the all time series, although Oklahoma has had the upper hand in recent years. Last year Oklahoma won 28-21 in a back and forth showdown. Both teams coming into Saturday’s match up have put up gaudy numbers. Sam Bradford has completed 72.6 percent of his passes, with 18 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions, #2 in the country in pass efficiency. Colt McCoy has 79.3 percent with 16 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, he’s #4. When it comes to QB’s this season the Big 12 is the mother load with the above mentioned leading the way.
Documented Handicappers Prediction: This game has the potential to be as close as last year’s match up. This will be Oklahoma’s first real challenge and one wonders if their defense can contain the Texas offense. However, OU has outscored their opponents 103-3 in the 1st quarter this year and Texas has only allowed 9 points this year in the 1st quarter. The line came in at -7 and the DH staff looks for Oklahoma to set their team apart from the rest in this game.
